Help with Relay

Short how-to guides, answers to the questions people ask most, and a person to write to when you need one.

How-to videos

Four short videos of the real Relay app, with captions. The videos show an earlier version of the screens; the written steps under each one match the app today.

Sign in and install Relay 50 sec

Open Relay, sign in, and put it on your home screen.

  1. Open themachine-voice.pages.dev/app and sign in, or tap Create an account.
  2. On iPhone, in Safari: tap Share, then Add to Home Screen, then Add. Relay opens full screen from its own icon.
  3. On a computer: click the install button in the Chrome or Edge address bar.

Make a link call 44 sec

A browser-to-browser call for 0.1¢ a minute, no phone number needed.

  1. On Talk, type or say who to call (“call John about dinner”), or open the Call tab and type the name.
  2. Tap Start the call, then Send the link by text or email.
  3. They open the link in any browser and tap Answer. Use Mute and Hang up as needed.

Add a person 30 sec

Keep the people and places you call in one list.

  1. Open the People tab and tap Add a person, or Import contacts from a .vcf file.
  2. Type the name and number, then tap Save. Contacts stay on your device.
  3. Tap Call next to a name, then Start the call.

Find a past call in History 36 sec

Every call and every message, with who, when and how long.

  1. Open the History tab. Search by name or by what it was about.
  2. Tap a call to see what was said. Messages Relay took show the caller’s reason and call-back number.

Let Relay answer for you

  1. Open the Answer tab and tap Share my link. Send it to anyone who should be able to call you.
  2. They open it in any browser and tap Call. If Relay is open on your phone or computer, it rings there.
  3. If you don’t pick up in 25 seconds, Relay greets them and takes their name, reason and number. It shows up under Messages and in History.

Common questions

Does Relay make real phone calls?

Yes. Relay calls businesses and people from your Relay number, says it is calling for you, and reports back. You can also call any US or Canadian phone yourself from the browser, or send a link for a browser-to-browser call.

Does Relay pretend to be me?

No. Relay's first line on every call says that it is an AI assistant calling on your behalf, and why. It never claims to be a person.

Can I watch the call?

Yes. Relay Direct calls are live conversations between the two of you, so there is nothing to watch. Every call, and every message Relay takes when you don't answer, is listed in the History tab.

How do I pay for minutes?

Add credit by card, from $5 (Stripe handles it; Relay never sees your card number). Each call comes out of it: 5¢ a minute when Relay calls for you, 2¢ a minute when you call a phone from the browser, 0.1¢ a minute for a link call, 2¢ a text, $2 a month for your own number. You can also earn credit by inviting friends. Nothing expires.

Where is my call history kept?

The History tab lists every call Relay made or took for you: who, why, how long, what it cost, and how it went. Full transcripts are deleted automatically within a week. Contacts you add stay in your browser on that device. See the privacy policy for details.

Is there a phone app?

Relay runs in any modern browser today, on desktop and phone. On a phone, use Share > Add to Home Screen (iPhone) or the browser menu > Install app (Android) to get a Relay icon that opens full screen.
